ICKY STICKY STUCK!

by Tanya Saunders; with illustrations by Faith Broomfield-Payne

a FARMYARD HEROES story

Another raucous Farmyard Heroes story, told in rhyming verse and packed full of ‘learning to listen’ sounds, brought to life by Faith Broomfield-Payne’s enchanting illustrations of the cheerful farmyard crew. From the braying donkey (haw haw haw) to the cackling crow (caw caw caw), they’re all there to witness the playful duck and the handsome horse getting themselves into a rather sticky situation…but who will come to the rescue and be declared today’s Farmyard Hero?

The horse and the duck are up to their old tricks.

Oh dear! Will they ever learn that mud sticks?

Uh-Oh! Now they need help from someone who can dig…

Who will be today’s Farmyard Hero - the farmer, his dog or the pig?

The story opens with the night animals and the day animals exchanging roles – as one lot falls asleep, the others awake…and so too does the boy farmer, who is back for his daily dose of farmyard fun. As you may recall from the first Farmyard Heroes story, “C.I. Quest”, the farmer is deaf and has cochlear implants, which help him to hear. He loves to listen to all the farmyard sounds (from the hogs and horses to the hounds) and he’s never happier than when he is surrounded by all his animal friends.

While this book features a deaf character, it is not specifically about hearing loss; it is a delightful, humorous and inclusive story for all children to enjoy, whether or not they have hearing loss.

ICKY STICKY STUCK!

Some subtle deaf awareness messages are gently integrated into the story, making the book a helpful resource for mainstream teachers educating their pupils about hearing loss. At the same time, the book allows deaf and hard of hearing children who use cochlear implants, hearing aids or other assistive hearing technology to see themselves represented. As the author says, “One thing I have learned as the parent of a deaf child is this: #RepresentationMatters is not just a buzz phrase with no meaning - it really does matter, and it really does make a difference to our children!"
